Philosophy of Education

The human resources of the Cumberland House Cree Nation are its most invaluable assets. The Chief and Council and the Education Board are responsible to the membership to oversee that education, as a priority, is not just a symbol par excellence. An appropriate education for Band membership is one that fosters:

  1. The formulation of age and grade competencies in all basic areas of academic and cognitive skills.
  2. Competence in Cree Language Skills and Knowledge of Cree Culture.
  3. Competence in English Language Skills.
  4. The development of self-discipline and a positive self-concept.
  5. Preparation for lifetime responsibilities in areas of employment, family life and recreation.
  6. An attitude toward education that results in life long learning.

The Council and the Board encourages active participation of both parents and students in all NAMS school programs. To be effective in managing our education system the aspirations and cultural values of Band members must be respected in policy and program development. The progress of our First Nation depends on the educational and technical skills of our youth. The Board on the behalf of the Council will maximize available resources in an attempt to meet this goal.
